What Lies Beneath: Functional Training & Why the Surface Matters

Today’s health club looks drastically different from the traditional “gym” of 30 years ago. In the 1980’s through the early 2000’s, mainstream clubs had it all: selectorized machines, cardio equipment, aerobics, group X, massage, and tanning. Today, functional training is the focus, and gyms are eliminating equipment to create dedicated functional training space. So is this emphasis on functional training a new movement or a fad?

Spooky Nook Sports, the largest indoor sports complex in North America, believes it’s the new trend. Although the facility opened to its members in 2012, this 700,000-square-foot facility, which is part of a 14-acre complex, noticed its members wanted more, when it came to functional training.

Cup of Cheer Program

Merritt Clubs Keep Members
Active Through The Holidays

Provided by – Donyel Cerceo, Marketing Director with Merritt Clubs

Each quarter Merritt Clubs runs a program to help drive retention. In most cases it is a free challenge. In November we kicked off our fourth quarter of 2019 challenge, the Cup of Cheer Holiday Challenge. This was the most successful challenge we have had to date.  The challenge ran November 15, 2019-January 15, 2020.  Its purpose was to help members with the stress of the holidays and to encourage them to come to the club so they could avoid the dreaded holiday weight gain.  The challenge was easy, members would sign up and come to the clubs at least 20 times between November 15, 2019 and January 15, 2020.  We wanted to create the habit of members using the club more. Members were given a tracking sheet to show which dates they came to the club.  Once completed, members returned the tracking sheet to the club program manager. The program manager would confirm the member’s visits and give them a cool ceramic coffee mug.  We had 2000 members sign up for the challenge and 1500 members complete the challenge.  The members absolutely loved the mugs. Those who did not participate in the challenge asked how they could buy a mug. Lesson learned, make the challenge attainable to anyone, and people love coffee mugs.

Increase Captured Revenue by Rethinking Your Club’s
Revenue-cycle Management

Provided by  Andi Conti, Director of Marketing Programs, ABC Financial Services

Optimizing the revenue-cycle management means better service and financial outcomes for health clubs.  By optimizing revenue-cycle management, clubs will be able to cut costs and increase captured revenue from billings by 5-7%.

Any club owner recognizes that it’s critical to turn booked membership revenue into dollars in the bank. In many industries, from financial services to healthcare, the combination of proven technologies, processes and people that make this happen is referred to as revenue-cycle management or RCM. But how and why should club operators rely on RCM to succeed?
